Traditional Dental Implants Vs. One Visit Dental Implant Surgery

Dentist Blog

If you have missing teeth in your mouth, your dentist may suggest dental implants to restore those missing teeth. This is a process in which a small titanium rod is placed into your jaw, and a synthetic crown is created to fit on top of the rod. The tooth looks and feels natural, and does not require any special care. You can expect a dental implant to last permanently, and you brush and floss like normal. While some dental implants take several visits to the dentist office, some dentists now offer dental implants in one visit. The same work is done from start to finish in both types of procedures.

Traditional Dental Implant Surgery

Traditional dental implant surgery involves several visits to the dentist over a period of a few months. In the first visit, your dentist will place the titanium rod into your jaw. The rod will then be allowed to fuse with your jaw bone, a process that can take several months. Once the rod is secure in your mouth, the synthetic crown created is permanently secured onto the top. If the tooth fits well, nothing further has to be done to your implant.

Dental Implant Surgery in One Visit

Some dentists offer dental implant surgery all in one visit. This means that the titanium rod will be put into place, and the crown will be secured to the rod before the rod is able to embed into your jaw. You will need to be careful with this area of your mouth, as the rod will still need to embed into your jaw. If you chew too hard on that area, you are at higher risk for having the implant fail. Talk with your dentist if you are concerned about avoiding the area, and regarding what you can do to help the implant succeed.

In order to be a good candidate for dental implants, you have to be in generally good health. If you are a diabetic, your blood sugar levels have to be in control. Your dentist may choose not to do dental implant surgery if you suffer from significant gum disease, as this often leads to implant failure. If you are a smoker, it's time to quit because most dentists will not do dental implants on those that smoke. When you have missing teeth in your mouth, it's time to talk to your dentist about the potential for dental implants.
